Some games need more room than a 3'x3' skirmish board but would get lost on a 6'x4'. The 48"x36" sits in between: long enough for two warbands to manoeuvre, compact enough to fit an ordinary dining table.

For SAGA
48"x36" is the standard SAGA table. The settings that suit it are open land and woods:

• Grassland, Universal Grass and Heroic Grass for open fields
• Crossroads for cobbled roads through grassy country
• Early Spring for melting snow and muddy paths
• Jungle for dense, overgrown terrain

Imagine two warbands of Vikings and Saxons meeting at the Crossroads, every unit within a few moves of the fight.

How to choose
Start with your game: if it is SAGA, pick one of the open-land or woodland designs above. If you use 4'x3' for your own scenarios, choose the setting that tells your story - open fields for fast manoeuvre, ruins and desert for cover-heavy fights, sea or space for something completely different.

Why a dedicated 48x36 mat
A mat made for this size covers the table edge to edge, with no folded corners from a bigger mat. Every mat is rubber with a polyester fabric top and a sublimation print; the base grips the table, the soft surface protects painted miniatures and the laser-cut edges do not fray.
