Some games are played on the board itself: tiles laid on a grid, tokens pushed around a track, cards dealt into printed spaces. In those games the board takes the punishment. A rubber main board mat carries the same layout as the original, so the rules do not change, but the surface does: it stays flat, it does not fold, and nothing slides off it.

Why rubber instead of cardboard

Nothing slides: the rubber backing grips the table and the soft top grips the tiles and tokens.
